“That’s Smoky Sampson,” Sam Martini muttered, seeing three riders come down out of the trees, riding toward Slater’s main house. “I gotta get down to the hay. Gotta get hid real good.” He mounted up and rode in the quickening darkness off the hillside toward the hay barn. Before he got there, it was pitch dark, the only light coming from stars and lanterns in the bunkhouse and big house.

Martini tied the horse under the eaves where he could eat but not be seen from the house or barn, and built a small nest to lay in. He could see the big house from the grass fort and hoped when it came daylight that he would not be seen. Wrapped in the big coat he stole from Valley Paddock and mostly covered by the cut grass, Martini was warm, hungry, but warm. It was only moments that the actions of the day caught up with him and he eased down into the warm grass and fell fast to sleep. He never heard nor saw the ranch crew return to the big house.
